Stick Fighting
The Art of Kalinda
Stick Fighting
Kalinda, or stick fighting, is an African-derived martial art that combines combat with drumming, chanting, and ritual. The Gayelle (fighting ring) brings together stick fighters in tests of skill and courage.
History & Culture
Stick fighting arrived in Trinidad with enslaved Africans and became a central part of Canboulay celebrations. The practice was repeatedly banned by colonial authorities who feared its potential for organized resistance, but it survived through secret practice and eventually became legitimized. Today, stick fighting is performed in the Gayelle, a circular arena where fighters face off to the rhythm of African drums. The tradition includes elaborate rituals, chants (lavways), and a code of honour. Champions like Doris Francois and Winston "Spree" Simon are celebrated as national heroes.
