Calypso evolved from the West African griot tradition of storytelling through song. In Trinidad, it became a powerful tool for social commentary, allowing singers to criticize colonial authorities, politicians, and social issues through clever lyrics and double entendres. The art form flourished in the Calypso Tents, where performers competed for titles like Calypso Monarch. Legendary figures like Lord Kitchener, Mighty Sparrow, Calypso Rose, and Lord Pretender shaped the genre. Calypso gave birth to Soca music in the 1970s, expanding the tradition while maintaining its cultural significance. Today, the National Calypso Monarch competition remains one of the most prestigious events in Carnival.
