Extempo
The Art of Improvisation
Extempo
Extempo, or extemporaneous calypso, is the art of creating lyrics on the spot. Competitors are given topics moments before performing and must compose witty, rhyming verses in real-time.
History & Culture
Extempo calypso represents the purest form of the calypsonian tradition, requiring quick wit, extensive vocabulary, and musical ability. Competitors face off in verbal duels called "picong" or "war," often incorporating personal insults and social commentary into their improvised verses. The tradition connects directly to African call-and-response patterns and the griot tradition of improvised storytelling. Famous extempo artists include Brother Valentino, Lingo, and Cro Cro. The National Extempo Monarch competition, often held as part of Kaisorama, showcases the best improvisers in the country.
